The IL Kappa chapter is committed to our mission of literacy both at a national and local level. Did you know that over half a million adults in Chicago lack the literacy skills they need to meet their goals for related to employment, parenting, and community participation? In Hyde Park, we are only blocks away from communities in which we can truly make a difference in eradicating childhood illiteracy. Our sisters volunteer their time each week at Saint Thomas the Apostle School to tutor elementary school students by reading and doing activities with them.
Fraternity Day of Service is Pi Beta Phi’s International Day of Literacy-related service celebrated in honor of Dr. Seuss’® birthday on March 2nd. Our chapter, along with Pi Phi chapters and alumnae groups around the world, was proud to participate in Fraternity Day of Service by contributing to the Signature Event in Chicago. In Chicago alone, 25,000 new books were sorted and distributed to area schools, after-school programs and community programs serving students from low-income families.
